Joalharia do Carmo hosts the II Biennale of Contemporary Jewelry

Until July 15th, visit the Filigree jewelry exhibition inspired by the poem "Madrugada" by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

PIN – Portuguese Association of Contemporary Jewelry, joined the official celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April and launched the second International Biennial of Contemporary Jewelry, inspired by “Madrugada”, the poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. This time, the poem that continues to inspire new forms of art has been transformed into delicate Filigree jewels, crafted in verse by the hands of future Portuguese jewelers, and which are on display at the century-old Joalharia do Carmo, in Chiado, Lisbon.

The jewelry created by students at CINDOR, the only Professional Training Center for Goldsmithing and Jewelery in the country, could not be on display in a more appropriate place; Joalharia do Carmo challenged the principle of the sector’s conventional economic model and turned it inside out when, in October 2022, it became the only jewelry store in the country and the world to exclusively sell Certified Portuguese Filigree, concentrating 100% of its offer in jewelry that displays a hallmark and a certification label proving its uniqueness, making it more easily recognized and identified as authentic.

The jewels that make up this exhibition focus on innovation and contemporary design and celebrate freedom as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, while at the same time evoking the critical thinking and spontaneity that marked a crucial historical period for Portugal.

An exhibition not to be missed and which can be visited every day at number 87 Rua do Carmo, in Lisbon, at Joalharia do Carmo, from Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 9:30am to 10pm. On the 5th and 12th of July, in addition to visiting the exhibition, Joalharia do Carmo also has demonstrations of Filigree jewelry production made by young artists.

Expecting around 15 thousand visitors and participants, the second Contemporary Jewelry Biennial has a program with more than 25 events, exhibitions, school meetings, masterclasses and artists talks in Lisbon, with Joalharia do Carmo, MUDE – Design and Fashion Museum, Ar.Co – Center for Art and Visual Communication, the Museum of Decorative Arts – FRESS, among other entities as its central stages and partners
