The Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine in Times Square, New York, is in the shortlist for an international retail award, along with Nike, Disney and Fortnum & Mason

The Creative Retail Awards are an annual distinction that recognizes the world's best stores in retail design and experience

Organized by the Shop & Display Equipment Association (SDEA) and Retail Focus magazine, the Creative Retail Awards is the stage for the world’s best examples of retail experience, store design, lighting, visual merchandising and technology, across 21 categories.

A single Portuguese brand is among the finalists: The Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine with its store in Times Square, in New York.

The brand, which was born from the desire to celebrate canned fish as a heritage of Portuguese culture, is committed to the in-store experience, unquestionable quality and artisanal production methods, using History as a narrative.

In Times Square, green and gold dominate the “Portuguese Sardine” which presents itself as an exquisite Canning Library. The red neon in the window proudly displays the name “Portuguese Sardine” and inside an animated film transports visitors to a mind-blowing dimension. In this library where there is no shortage of books and the shelves are filled with color; Portuguese tins with canned fish, illustrated with a colorful and attractive design; a souvenir that carries the History of Portugal wrapped in originality. “Stars and Stripes Forever” is the store’s soundtrack, created in 1896 by John Philip Sousa, Portuguese descent, having become the national march of the United States of America and the 6 philharmonic band doll musicians on display were inspired by the Popular Portuguese Festivities. Together, these elements placed the store on the shortlist for the retail experience category of the 2024 Creative Retail Awards.

“Judging this year’s Creative Retail Awards was an inspiring experience. The caliber of entries is truly impressive, showing how the industry is embracing a bright and innovative future,” says Tim Nash, one of this year’s judges.

With hundreds of candidate stores from all over the world – from Paris, Singapore, London or New York, but only 5 finalists in each category, the Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine stands honorably among other prestigious brands such as Nike, Disney, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Bloomingdales, Coach, Sephora, Jo Malone, La Mer, Adidas or Dr. Martens. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in London on September 19th.
