Joalharia do Carmo celebrates its centenary in Roca Lisboa Gallery
Until December 27th, Roca Lisboa Gallery hosts an exhibition that celebrates the century of history of Joalharia do Carmo, an iconic space in downtown Lisbon that now hosts the most noble national jewelry: Portuguese Filigree.
The exhibition, which opened on November 5th, reveals, through unique handmade jewelry, the traditional Filigree motifs from emblematic pieces, such as the recreation of the Belém Tower, dating from 1977-78. But it’s not just that: it’s also due to the irreverent pieces, such as the creation of the “Filigree Heart La Casa de Papel”, offered to actress Úrsula Corberó, made in collaboration with Netflix, or the “Double Heart in Filigree”, created in 1970, and which gained international notoriety when it was used by actress Sharon Stone in 2014.
The exhibition “Filigree: 100 years Joalharia do Carmo” takes visitors on a journey through time, from the origins of jewelry, frequented by Lisbon’s elite, to its exclusive dedication to Filigree, demonstrating how this centuries-old art remains alive and vibrant.
This partnership between Roca Lisboa Gallery and Joalharia do Carmo appears as a celebration of design and creativity, inherent to both brands, reinforcing Roca’s connection with Portugal. Despite its origins in Spain and global presence, Roca has an important industrial hub in Portugal, with eight production centers and around 2000 workers. This exhibition is, therefore, also a celebration of Portugal and national talent. As part of this initiative, a Round Table will take place on November 21st with the motto “The New Challenges of Filigree in Portugal” providing a space for debate on the future of this art.
For Emílio Salazar, Managing Director of Roca in Portugal, “this exhibition, in celebrating 100 years of Joalharia do Carmo, also celebrates the design and know-how inherent to this art, dimensions common to our universe as a manufacturing brand. ”
Sónia Felgueiras, Marketing Director at Grupo Valor do Tempo said “Filigree suffered a setback in the 90s when a new concept of fashion design expanded into jewelry: minimalism. Aesthetics eliminated details and Filigree was the exact opposite of this new concept; goldsmiths and fillers despaired of maintaining their art. By investing in Certified Filigree, we reaffirm our social economy model that properly remunerates the bases of the value chain in order to make the profession attractive, at the same time that we give new life and positioning to Filigree and offer the end customer a unique and a singular experience. “
This exhibition can be visited during the Roca Lisboa Gallery’s opening hours, from Monday to Friday, between 10:30 am and 5:30, pm and entry is free.
